Complexity of a cafe

I knew I was in trouble when the barista asked what kind of grinder I was using. Seriously? He seemed concerned that I was not getting the most complete and complex taste from my beans. Because I use Tanzania Peaberry exclusively, he was actually worried.

I explained to him that I used a blade grinder from Starbucks that I bought at least 20 years ago. Then his frown turned into a grimace while saying “if it works for you”.

Damn right it works for me you snot! I like to shred my beans, brew them and enjoy a hot, black cup of coffee.

Do I need it to be more complex? I guess he thought so.

  1. Personally, I use a manual coffee grinder and a 2 cups Italian coffee pot. I also have a press coffee pot. However, as caffeine is water soluble, press pot tends to give more caffeine than the Italian pot. Enjoy your coffee, Barry … and good drawing !

    1. Thanks sir. I used a press pot for years for economy, but mostly taste. However, I am rushing at 5:30 in the morning and can’t quite remedy errors and grounds that fall in my sink. Shaky hands of a 63 year old.

  2. Oh no, you’ve let us all down ! 😉 Dare you show your face again? Were you slow hand clapped out of there? As a tea drinker I like to deflate coffee snobs by asking for mellow birds which apparently was the worst instant coffee ever

I just went to a café for the first time in years, and was so confused when the barista didn’t get me when I asked for a cup of coffee. “Cup of coffee please”, “What kind?”, “eeh, just a regular coffee?”, “yea, but what kind?” Turns out there are about fifty kinds, but no such thing as “just regular coffee”.
    I think I’ll avoid cafés from now on…

    1. Shame on them. I really detest the enhancements imposed by anyone, who believe “sophistication” equate to enjoyment. I too order a regular cup of coffee without specifying 1) Size without using Italian. 2) Dark or light, without juggling regions of growth. What’s ironic, is that after the inquisition, they come back with your coffee in a paper cup.

  4. Having worked as a barista long ago, I can only smile. And of course, I’ve been on the other side of the counter, too. Luckily, there are a number of good coffee places around here that don’t get into that nonsense. That is one sure hand that made those curves in that drawing, with or without the help of Tanzania peaberry

    For some life is a grind, while others stay grounded with a cup of coffee. 🙂
